875,000 words
No, unfortunately not the amount of writing I got done while on vacation last week. Close, though. It's the number of words I read in those 6 days, all of them in Sherlock Holmes fan fics. That's an average of over 145,000 words a day. I don't know how many hours a day I spent reading; more than three, certainly. One reason I don't know is that when I read once I'm in bed, I don't look at my watch so that I don't stress myself with how late I'm staying up.
The total represents 33 fics, although 4 of them were so bad or simply not to my taste that I didn't finish them (I included only partial word counts for those 4 in the total). Most of the fics were based on the BBC verse, although a good portion were based on the original books, and a good portion of those in turn were by the wonderful author, Kate Forsythe. All of the fics were Sherlock/John (or Holmes/Watson). I am still not sated. Although I admit I am at the point where I will skim when authors rehash any of the BBC episodes; most often, they do that with ASiP and Reichenbach. I also skim treatments of The Empty House, interestingly, which I count as part of the BBC canon even though we haven't seen yet how it is adapted for Sherlock. I can't recall seeing any fan fic authors do anything very interesting or original with Empty House. Hopefully Gatiss and Moffat will be able to wow me.
