Some thoughts: The shape of these statistics is very similar to the last fest hosted on this community, namely the 2010 Summer Hallows Jumble (link to my statistics). Aside from the nearly identical numbers of fics and art, once again, the ratings were uniformly low, with nothing above a PG-13, even though it would have been allowed. One factor may have been the community rule that says NC-17 fics are only allowed at the mods' discretion. This could make people veer to the side of caution and keep their fics low rated in order to avoid having a hassle with getting permission to post.
The word counts were also relatively short, with the lion's share of the fics in the lowest two length categories. Over half the fics (57%) were less than 2,000 words long. This is probably due in part to the short creation period. The first fic and art were posted just 8 days after the prompts were sent out -- although that particular fic was one of the longer ones, at just over 3,000 words. Still, there simply wasn't time to complete a big bang length fic in the given time frame.
Another factor may have been the timing of the fest, though. Only 10 of the 27 submissions were posted by December 25th, and 13 of the submissions were posted in the last 2 days of the fest, on January 9 and 10. People may have been too busy with their real lives in the holiday period to devote much time to fan fiction. Additionally, there were several other exchanges and fests running at the same time, which may have spread some participants thin.
