That bit at the end when Sherlock found Tristram wasn't at all clear, I'm sorry. Sherlock smelled the cigarette smoke on him and thought he'd snuck off to the stable to smoke because that's what Sherlock used to do when he was feeling stressed at home as a teenager. That's why he told him to go on the roof, because that's where Sherlock used to go. So in a way, it was meant as a little hint of solidarity on Sherlock's part, that he understood how Tristram felt and was trying to support him. But it didn't come across right. My fault.
