Title: Raw

Rating: Explicit
Length: 149K
Relationships: John/Greg, Sherlock/Victor, Sherlock/John
Summary: When John takes up mixed martial arts training, he doesn't expect it to lead to a new relationship. But there are darker things afoot at the gym, and John is soon drawn in deeper than he wants. When an old flame from Sherlock's past turns up, it's time for everyone to declare their loyalties... and for John to finally discover where his heart truly belongs.

Fair warning, this has a cliffhangery ending à la The Great Game or The Reichenbach Fall (although not the same as either), in which the fate of one or more characters is left uncertain. But never fear because the sequel will start posting immediately. :)

The fic itself is set sometime vaguely a few months after John and Sherlock meet, and pretty much goes its own way. It is truly a multishipper’s paradise, with all of the listed pairings being given an honest and fair treatment, but I hope it’s not a spoiler to reveal that Johnlock is endgame. Eventually. ;)

It’s a real trip and a treat that’s in store, with lots of twists and surprises and setups for the long shot as we are taken into the seedy world of drug-dealing, organized crime, and gratuitous violence. The story excels at having both secretive and blatant motives, rough and tender emotions, and sensitive and raunchy sex, with a completely original and neatly planned case that riffs on the canon fascination with fairy tales. It’s truly an excellent, engrossing adventure as well as a real workout for the heartstrings on every side.

Title: Lucifer's Gardens (link to AO3)
Author: ampersand_ch
Translator: swissmarg
Rating: Explicit
Word count: 32,683
Relationships: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Summary: John goes undercover for an investigation as a favour to Lestrade in a village in Suffolk. The events surrounding the case awaken deep-seated fears in Sherlock. While John begins to come to a realisation of what he needs in Lucifer's Gardens, Sherlock tries to find a way to reach John – in more ways than one.

=======

Set in Bury St Edmonds – for the most part in an old manor house with secrets in the attic, poison gardens, and an exclusive male social club that’s probably the opposite of the Diogenes in every possible way – this fic sees John as the investigatory lead and doing quite a good job of it. It takes us on a fascinating psychological, emotional, and mystical journey that uncovers old wounds, inflicts new ones, and eventually shows the way to healing and a new life for John and Sherlock. I was especially intrigued by the Jungian masculine archetypes and the fact that the solution to the case doesn’t go in a straight line, but rather past many dead ends, double blinds, and secret passageways. This does go to some difficult places but as always the destination is worth the journey. With beautiful hurt/comfort (Sherlock being the comforter this time), a gorgeous inside look at Sherlock’s mind palace, a startling reveal, mysterious birds, and a neat twist on the undercover-as-boyfriends trope.

Word count: 31,381
Fandom: Sherlock (TV)
Rating: Mature
Relationships: Sherlock Holmes & John Watson, Sherlock Holmes & Jim Moriarty, Sebastian Moran & Jim Moriarty
Characters: Sherlock Holmes, John Watson, Jim Moriarty, Sebastian Moran, Mycroft Holmes
Content and warnings: Violence, Torture, Psychological Torture, Implied/Referenced Torture, Kidnapped Sherlock, Drugs, Drugged Sherlock, Humiliation, Psychological Trauma, Wetting, Memory Loss, Caning, Wax Play, Erotic Electrostimulation, Friendship, Pre-Slash, Trust Issues, Loss of Trust, Kissing
Summary: Moriarty abducts Sherlock several times in a row, bringing him to a secret location where his victim is at his mercy. Thanks to a special drug cocktail, Sherlock has no memory of the abductions. But he begins acting strangely back home. So strangely that John finally notices...

======

This really gets into the dark, depraved recesses of Moriarty's psyche and his obsessions with Sherlock, fairy tales, games and power. Absolutely classic gaslighting chock full of very disturbing mind games that include mental, physical and sexual torture, drugs, and undermining Sherlock's most valuable asset... not his intellect (well, that too) but his friendship with John. Gen but veering strongly into pre-slash territory, this story takes place during series 2 and sets the stage for The Reichenbach Fall, explaining how Moriarty came to be in Mycroft's custody. Major Sherlock!whump, not for the faint of heart, but with a tender, optimistic ending that should heal at least some of the wounds inflicted.

Title: Building Jerusalem (link to AO3)
Author: ampersand_ch

Rating: Explicit
Word count: 26,426
Relationships: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson
Summary: John finds out that Sherlock has more secrets from him than he ever imagined. The discovery threatens to destroy their relationship.
Content Warnings:Death of a canon character (not Sherlock or John), infidelity, domestic violence

======

This truly contains some of the worst angst short of major character death. The title refers to the lyrics of the song Jerusalem, which I think capture perfectly the horrendous struggle that Sherlock and John must go through before they achieve their "green and pleasant land". Much of the story is set in the wasteland of a Siberian winter, which is a fitting backdrop for the stripped-down, stark truths which the characters are made to face, and serves as a perfect counterpoint to the lush gardens awaiting them in Sussex. This is a story about an established relationship between two mature people, and yet being that one of them is Sherlock Holmes, not all is as it seems. The past haunts both men, as well as imminent danger in a very realistic and topical case. And with retirement looming, both men's age starts to catch up to them, forcing them to face new obstacles and no longer be able to rely on their bodies or minds the way they used to. Lots of emotional and physical hurt, gorgeous imagery, and poignant insights on the way to the promised land.

Title: When the East Wind Falls Silent (link to AO3)
Author: ampersand_ch
Translator: swissmarg
Rating: Explicit
Word count: 32,350
Relationships: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, John Watson/Mary Morstan
Summary: Sherlock is called back from exile by his brother in order to catch Moriarty, who has resurfaced in a televised message. The task which awaits Sherlock goes far beyond anything he feared. Starts at the end of HLV.
Warnings: Something happens in this story that some readers may find upsetting. I am deliberately not tagging or warning for it because it would be a pretty big spoiler. If you have concerns or specific triggers that you are worried about, however, you can find the spoiler here: LINK

======

Just when it looks like things are returning to normal with the birth of John and Mary's daughter, everything falls apart with one emotional tragedy coming fast on top of the last. This is an involved and complex casefic that ties in all the threads of Moriarty, Magnussen, and Mary, along with new threats and allies. Spider tattoos, spies, secret siblings, and shocking deaths make this a carousel of adrenaline, adventure, angst, and ardor, with Sherlock and John in the midst of it all, trying to figure out how they fit together in the new constellation of their lives.

Title: Music for John (link to AO3)
Author: ampersand_ch
Translator: swissmarg
Rating: Explicit
Word count: 25,189
Relationships: Sherlock/John
Summary: Sherlock can't sleep and seeks comfort in his violin. And as he spends night after night immersed in music, it becomes clear to him what's causing his insomnia.

======

This story not only explores beautifully Sherlock’s relationship to music and his violin, but also how he uses music to work though and come to terms with his feelings for John. It is really a spiritual experience, a revelation and a conversion of a sort that he goes through as he composes, and it’s just a very smart, artistic, and emotionally in-touch story. There is some lovely pining with light angst, eventually resolved in a gorgeously emotional physical interlude, with the backdrop of a sultry London summer and forces of nature acting almost as additional supporting characters. With texting, a clairsentient clockmaker, something Sherlock didn’t know about John, and fireworks going off in more ways than one.

Title: Four Degrees Celsius (link to AO3)
Author: ampersand_ch
Translator: swissmarg
Rating: Explicit
Word count: 28,839
Relationships: Sherlock/John
Summary: The Reichenbach story in the original setting. Sherlock and John move their relationship to the next level at the beginning of their stay in the Bernese Alps. But as it turns out, there's no time for the two of them. Moriarty is here, and a catastrophe is looming.

======

This is a pre-series 2 Reichenbach AU set in Switzerland - written by a Swiss with a love for the country, the land, and the beauty of nature, and it shows. The descriptions are so vivid and stark they make you feel like you're there, in the midst of all the water and heat and cold and danger of the rawness of the mountains. And that heat and cold and danger is reflected in the relationship between John and Sherlock as they are set off on an inevitable journey that forces them both together and apart. A particularly brilliant aspect of this is that it is set up as an extended parallel to The Little Prince by Antoine Saint-Exupéry. A complex tale that works on several levels and really gets at the depth and heart of what Sherlock and John are to each other.

Title: Algorithms of the Night (link to AO3)
Author: ampersand_ch
Translator: swissmarg
Rating: Explicit
Word count: 28,787
Relationships: Sherlock/John
Summary: Sherlock goes undercover at a psychiatric hospital for a new case. For John and Sherlock it's the start of an unforeseen, emotional adventure that has far-reaching consequences for their relationship.

======

Each one of this author's stories is so special, with a focus on some particular area/topic/hobby that is in itself fascinating but also somehow connects to John and Sherlock and brings them together. In the first two fics I translated by ampersand, that was erotic photography and martial arts. In this one, it's Celtic traditions and sex therapy, and what a combination that turns out to be! As you might imagine, it's a very sexy story for that reason, but it's also emotionally draining, keeping both the characters and the reader on a knife's edge throughout. The angst and tension - both from the case and the relationship - is maintained at a sky-high level, leading to an explosive revelation that turns the entire story inside-out. With a serial killer, erotic massage, art therapy, a Celtic coven, the reappearance of Sholto, lies, lies, and more lies. And quite a lot of truth.

Title: Dancing With Fire (link to AO3)
Author: ampersand_ch
Translator: swissmarg
Rating: Explicit
Word count: 35,671
Relationships: Sherlock/John, Sherlock/OMC
Summary: A client named Benjamin Waters makes Sherlock question everything he thought he knew about himself, and throws John far out of his comfort zone. Even as John and Sherlock work together to investigate an unusual series of killings, they can't help questioning the basis of their friendship. But then something unexpected happens.

======

Another fantastic fic from this very talented German author, translated by me for your enjoyment. Set in a nebulous zone somewhere offsides of Moriarty and Mary, this casefic is chock full of relationship angst, soul-searching, secrets and deception, and worthy opponents. Add in a murderous martial arts expert, a holiday in the south of France, international drug traffickers, a domestic partnership, and Sherlock's boyfriend (yes, Sherlock's boyfriend), and you have all the makings for a swoon-worthy Johnlock love story. Yes, really. Trust me.

Title: The Other Man (link to AO3)
Author: ampersand_ch
Translator: [livejournal.com profile] swissmarg
Rating: Explicit
Word count: 27,411
Relationships: Sherlock/John, John/OMC
Summary: Sherlock's been acting strange. John suspects he's after something in particular, but it's not what John wants. Or is it? An adventure full of traps, tricks, and misunderstandings leads the two of them on a rocky and painful road to each other.

======

As part of my quest to bring the best of German fan fiction to the English fandom, I've translated the above fic, which I really think is something special. It has a mature although very angsty and fraught friends-to-lovers/fake boyfriends scenario along with a unique case with an ending that I don't think anyone will see coming. With erotic photography, a gay gentleman’s club, and Spanish nobility, thisis a very sensual, emotional story and although there's lots of hurt along the way, it does have a happy ending. I hope you'll give it a try!
