Trying to learn to GIMP
Jul. 16th, 2008 08:52 amGIMP (the GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free downloadable program similar to Photoshop (only Photoshop is only available in a licensed version, i.e. you have to pay for it). It is amazingly powerful (esp. for something that's free) and I can't even begin to understand it. But I love playing around with it. You can use it to create your own graphics, pimp up photos, design web pages, basically anything with digital images. I made my fan fic banners (see earlier posts) and the graphics for my Ballykissangel page with it before I really had studied how to use it, just basically doing cut-and-paste. Now I'm working through some of the tutorials on GimpTalk, and figuring out how to really use it. Here are a couple of things I've done. Now, these are just tutorials, mind, so I did them just to learn how to use certain features, and not to make a great finished product.

This is a photo manip of a field in Ireland. I like it because it looks like a painting. The sky should be a bit darker, and it needs to be on a dark background. It looks a bit washed-out on the white.

This is the basis for a fan-fic banner, so the blank space on the right should be filled with text or another image. I was learning how to do that blurred rainbow light effect, use brushes (the stars) and render (cut out) a figure. I think Snape looks a bit Darth Vader-ish with the space background, tee-hee.
Edit: I just did this one, following this tutorial on neoseeker:

This one is pretty much complete. I think it's a bit too washed-out again. The figures of Fred and George don't pop out enough. I like the text, though.
