Although it was also mentioned in at least one of the general fandom journals (Quibbler or Prophet), and I posted it on FictionAlley, so people who aren't members of one of those pairing-specific comms certainly could have known about it, if they were looking for a fest to participate in. But your explanation certainly makes sense and probably does explain the heavy R/Hr presence.
