Well, it's pretty certain that the story of Harold and the arrow is just that - a story - and that the enemy commander (not called William the Bastard for nothing!) sent a pre-selected murder squad after him and made sure he did not leave the battlefield alive. But why throw away an excellent legend and such a grimly ironical little addition?
