Some thoughts: This was a great idea for a fest, as evidenced by the good turnout. It was set right during the busiest time of the year for fests, in November/December, yet it still drew in over 20 participants. The low minimum word count and no-commitment format may have helped as well, making it a low-pressure activity that people could join if they ended up having a spare weekend.
There was even a solid showing of art, although I found it interesting that of the 4 artworks, only two of them showed a pregnant male. Of those, one showed the pregnant male (Draco) at a distance and seated, so that his pregnancy was not immediately obvious. And the other one showed only silhouettes so that it was not clear which character was which. Of the other two images, one showed only the two men's shoulders and heads, and the other showed the two men with a baby between them. I'm not sure whether the artists were shy about depicting male pregnancy or just didn't know how to draw it!
The ratings were very evenly spread across the board, which I found interesting, given that characters having sex was kind of a prerequisite for inclusion. Still, over half of the participants opted to keep the bedroom scenes off-screen, or else handle them in a non-explicit way. This says to me that the fascination with male pregnancy is not all about the sex, but about the relationships, or making the characters suffer through all of the unpleasant side effects of pregnancy like morning sickness, mood swings, and hemorrhoids.
The fic lengths likewise displayed a wide spread, ranging from only a few hundred words up to Big Bang length. Most of the fics (68%) were less than 5,000 words, but several authors also took advantage of the 2-month creation period to write longer pieces.
Unsurprisingly, Draco/Harry was the most popular pairing. I say this is unsurprising because Draco/Harry is the most common slash pairing in the HP fandom anyway, and there is even an entire community devoted to Draco/Harry Mpreg (
harrydracompreg). I was surprised to see such a strong showing from Next Gen characters, though. In addition to Albus Severus/Scorpius, there were fics and art featuring James Sirius, Teddy, Hugo, Louis, and Lorcan.
Another point of interest was how the pregnancies were distributed. There was a pretty clear bias in favor of making Harry be the one to get knocked up in his relationship with Draco. I don't know why this should be; I personally find a whiny, pregnant Draco pretty amusing.
One final note: All of the main pairings in this fest were slash, although the fest did allow for het pairings, as long as the male was the one getting pregnant (and I even posted a couple of het prompts). I guess mpreg was only interesting to the fest participants as a vehicle for a slash relationship.
