I think your take on this would be an enrichment to the fandom, even if it's probable that canon will go another way. There are simply stories that are so fascinating that they stay with you even after the fact. I think your's could be one of them.
And there's plenty of time. Considering the schedules of the two main actors they might have time to film early next year, which probably gives us another 16 months minimum to spin our thoughts.
