Some thoughts: As this is the slash/femmeslash parallel to the het-based
smutty_claus, I can't help but compare them just a bit. (See my statistical breakdown of
smutty_claus.)
smutty_claus had slightly more participants and gifts, and concomitantly more total words written, whereas
hp_yule_balls had more very long fics, with its longest fic being 10,000 words longer than the longest fic from
smutty_claus. Still, overall the two fests are basically on the same scale. The art to fic ratio was virtually identical (21% vs. 24%), and the mean and median fic lengths were roughly similar, as were the overall word length profiles.
Harry was the most popular character in both fests, Draco in the top 3 most popular males in both, and Pansy one of the two most popular females in both. Ginny was much more popular in the het fest, though, being the most popular female there, but only appearing in two gifts in the femmeslash version. Conversely, Severus was very popular in the slash fest, as the second most popular character, but only in the middle field in the het fest.
Pairings featuring Harry's generation were the most popular in both fests, although the preference was more clear in the het fest. In the slash/femmeslash fest, both cross generational pairings and pairings featuring characters of the Marauders' generation had larger slices of the pie, at the expense of Harry's generation. The older, mid, and next generations fared about the same.
Now looking just at
hp_yule_balls by itself, we can see that once again the art was slightly lower rated than the fics, on average. The overwhelming majority (3/4) of writers went all the way into NC-17 territory, whereas only about 1/3 of the artists did.
The word counts were quite typical, with the largest bunch of fics in the lowest two categories. However, I was impressed by the fact that there were 3 fics over 20,000 words, 2 in fact over 35,000 words. And that in a two-month creation period (including beta reading)!
The males were heavily favored, which is understandable as slash is generally more prevalent and popular in the Potterverse fandom than femmeslash. Four out of the top five characters, and seven of the top nine, were male.
Draco/Harry was clearly the most popular pairing, featuring in 10% of the gifts. The next most popular pairings only featured in 5% of the gifts. Still, the fact that the most popular pairing only turned up in 10% of the gifts shows that there was a very diverse range of pairings and interests represented. In fact, there were 44 different pairings and threesomes portrayed in the 56 gifts (remembering again that some gifts had more than one main pairing).
Pairings with characters in Harry's generation were very popular, but nearly as popular were cross-generational pairings. The Marauders' generation also had their fair share. The older generation was not very popular, which I attribute to the general lack of interest among the participants in viewing or reading about sexual activity between characters of that age group. The next generation was also not very strongly represented, which seems to be the case in most fests, actually. I think that people are more comfortable writing about and portraying characters they are familiar with, or that have more canon facts and backstory than the next generation characters do.
