HP Valensmut Statistics
Mar. 10th, 2011 12:12 pmWe're on a roll! With the posting of their master list,
hpvalensmut has also completed this year's exchange, and I've done some statistics for your viewing pleasure.

Some thoughts: Compared to the somewhat similar big smut exchanges (
hp_yule_balls and
smutty_claus) and kink fest (
hp_kinkfest ), turnout for this was relatively low. I mean, what's not to like about Valentine's smut? ;-)
The art to fic ratio was about par for the course, with three very nice gifts.
The ratings were actually a bit lower overall than I would have expected, for a smut fest, with only just over half of the gifts NC-17.
The word counts were just about in the average range, although quite a bit shorter overall than I would have expected, given the relatively long creation period. I mean, usually you have a few fics in the 5-10K range, and one or two longer than that. But here, all of the fics but one were under 5K, and even that one didn't hit 10K. Perhaps the earlier Holiday fests got in the way a bit, and people waited until after they were done with those before beginning their Valensmut entries, thus effectively having a shorter creation period than three months. Also interesting was that although there was no explicit word count minimum (that I saw, anyway), no one went below the typical exchange minimum of 1,000 words. It seems that the fandom is well-trained. ;-)
Slash was the clear favorite, as is typical in this fandom, although femmeslash was quite well represented.
And Harry continues his domination of the fests and exchanges, with yet another top spot finish. Severus and Draco rounding out the top three is likewise no surprise. I was interested to see Bellatrix and George make it into the top 8.
Another interesting point is that of the characters whose Sorting we know, there was only one non-Gryffindor or -Slytherin present in this exchange, namely Luna. There were also a few non-Sorted characters, though, including Stan, Gabrielle, and Rose, who might have been portrayed in other Houses in their fics, although I did not look at them all to check.
There were only two pairings that appeared more than once. Harry/Draco, clearly, is always popular. But although there were many other popular fandom pairings represented like Bellatrix/Narcissa and Harry/Severus, the rare pairs really took the day, with offererings like Pansy/Rose, Harry/Lee and Gabrielle/female!squid.
