Some thoughts: Now in its fifth sixth year,
wizard_love is the big het Valentine's Day fest, and it shows. With 65 participants, 2 Big Bang length fics, and 47 different pairings/threesomes this year, this has become one of the classics.
The amount of art was perhaps slightly low, at just under 20%, although still within 'norm'.
The ratings, as to be expected, were weighted toward the more smutty end of things, although 1/3 of the gifts remained on the low end of the allowed ratings, with R.
The word counts showed a very diverse spread, although the shorter fics were clearly the favored type, with fully 1/4 of the fics in the 1-2K range, and 95% shorter than 12,000 words.
Harry's run of domination as the most popular character in recent fests has been broken by a female character, to my surprise, although Hermione of course is usually right up there in popularity, she rarely takes the top spot. Females had a very strong showing overall, snagging 5 of the top 9 slots.
Looking at 'promiscuity', though, Harry was able to edge out Hermione for the largest number of partners. That means that Hermione was more often featured with the same partners (Ron, Draco, and Harry), while Harry ended up with a more diverse range of females.
Another surprise was the fact that Hermione/Ron ended up being the most popular pairing. Non-canon pairings usually fare better in fandom than canon ones, and this fest is actually no exception: if you look at the rest of the pairings that were featured more than once, the only other canon one here is Harry/Ginny, which was only the focus of 2 gifts. So out of 15 pairings featured more than once, only 2 were canon.
The fact that Gryffindor blew away all the other Houses in terms of popularity was also unexpected to me; I have the feeling that Slytherin and Gryffindor are usually more evenly split. I'm not sure why this happened, although if you look at the lists of pairings and characters, it's clear that there were more minor Gryffindors (Seamus, Percy, Lavender, Katie, etc.) getting featured than minor Slytherins (Marcus, Millicent, and Theo being the only ones). Usually very popular Slytherins like Snape and Lucius also didn't get a whole lot of love. Maybe it's that people tend to prefer seeing Snape in a slash pairing (Snarry, Snupin).
What was especially nice was to see the relatively big numbers for Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff this time, though. Together, they made it into double digits!

Date: 2011-03-25 09:25 am (UTC)It seems kind of pointless to list all of the once-only pairings. By definition, pairings that only came up once are not 'most popular'.
I also didn't list all of the characters that were only featured once, nor characters in the promiscuity list who only had one partner, for the same reason.
This isn't meant to reproduce the entire master list, only pick out the points that I thought were interesting or unusual.
