DM/HG Fic Exchange Statistics
May. 23rd, 2011 02:03 pmWhoo boy, here we go! As I anticipate a bit of interest in these statistics, let me start off by saying that it is entirely possible -- even likely -- that I have made errors in my compilations. If you think I've messed up, feel free to let me know. I probably won't go back and change anything, though, unless there is a systematic error that affects the overall trends. This is just for fun, not meant to be any sort of definitive guide. ;)
Fest community:
dmhgficexchange
Master List: Here
Fest type: Anonymous exchange
Premise: Draco/Hermione
Ratings restrictions: All ratings allowed
Length restrictions: Minimum 1000 words, no maximum
Creation period: 2 months
There were 115 gifts created and over 1 million words (!) written for this exchange:
Fics: 106
Art: 8
Mix: 1 (which I listened to twice completely through whilst doing the word counts)
Note: There was also one mini-mix included as part of a fic gift, but I did not count that separately, just as I did not count story banners for fics as separate art gifts.
Art to fic ratio: 7.5%
Number of participants: 109
Margaritama created 3 gifts.
phloxness ,
somandalicious , Jade II and mex created 2 gifts each. (Let me know if I forgot anyone, I'm just basing this on the posted list of pinch hitters.)
Number of authors who included word counts in their headers, thereby earning a special place in my heart: 10 :)
By rating:
Art:
G - 5
PG - 1
PG-13 - 1
NC-17 - 1

Fic:
(Note that there was one fic listed as PG-13 on the Master List that I counted as PG-15, since the author rated it as 'PG-13/light M', which to me is what the PG-15 rating is. There was also one fic listed as PG-13 on the Master List that was actually rated PG by the author. Therefore, my numbers are slightly different from what is shown on the Master List.)
G - 3
PG - 7
PG-13 - 42
PG-15 - 2
R - 30
NC-17 - 22

By word count:
Total words written: 1,016,984 words
Mean (average word count): 9,594 words
Median (half the fics shorter, half the fics longer): 5,200 words
Mode (most frequent fic length): 2-3K words
Breakdown:
1-2K - 15
2-3K - 20
3-4K - 10
4-5K - 7

50K+ - 3
The shortest fic was 1,019 words long. The longest fic was 58,513 words long.

The shortest fic was 1,019 words long. The longest fic was 58,513 words long.
I also noticed an interesting trend that the higher-rated fics tended to be longer. So I made a chart for that too. :p
Some thoughts: I guess you all really like Dramione. LOL. I think this is second only to the
sshg_exchange in terms of participant numbers for a single-pairing fest. That's just off the top of my head without checking back through the statistics, though. I'm sure someone will correct me. ;)
The amount of art was really low, one of the lowest art to fic ratios I've seen, especially for such a large fest. Are there just not that many Dramione artists? As usual, the art was generally rated low, with all but one rated PG-13 or lower.
The writers, however, more than made up for that in their enthusiasm, both in terms of sheer numbers, length of fics, and ratings. R and NC-17 accounted for almost exactly half of the fics, with the G and PG portion almost vanishingly small. PG-13 fics were the comfortable leader, so it wasn't a smutfest by any means. This says to me, though, that a good portion of the attraction of this ship is the UST, and -- for those comfortable writing it -- the sex.
The amount of wear and tear that went into keyboards across the world to produce this amount of fic must be truly phenomenal. Over a million words, wow! The word count profile is pretty typical, though, with the bulk of the fics under 5,000 words and a thin, tapering tail up toward the high end, with a very small number of authors (usually only one, but because of the size of this exchange, there were three) who wrote extraordinarily long fics that clearly set them apart from the pack. Especially given that the official creation period was slightly less than 2 months, can I just say, hats off.
True, some of the fics may have been started before the official beginning of the fest, and adapted slightly to the prompts the author received; there were also probably extensions given that lengthened the actual creation period for some authors up to a month longer, or more. And I noticed in the comments to several fics that there were complaints about the quality of the writing, both regarding SPaG as well as confusing plots or things that seemed out of character or weren't properly justified within the fic. So perhaps some authors were quite rushed to produce such long fics, and may have bitten off more than they (or their beta readers) could chew. I didn't read the fics myself, so I can't say whether the commenters' points were valid or not.
An interesting trend came up that I only noticed because the mods kindly arranged their master list by rating, namely that the higher-rated fics tended to be longer. I have no idea why this should be, as smutfic can just as well be written in 1,000 words as in 50,000. Still, something to keep an eye out for in other fests, I suppose.

Date: 2011-05-23 04:47 pm (UTC)And I apologize for being one of the ones who didn't post a word count. ;) I thought about it, actually but for some reason didn't.

Date: 2011-05-23 06:09 pm (UTC)I think word counts are a good idea for master lists where all you see is the title, or for multi-part fics where you can't see the whole fic on one LJ post. That way the reader knows what they are getting into before they start reading. But for a one-shot that you can scroll down and gauge about how long it will take you to read, I can see that a word count is not necessary. Still mighty helpful for statisticians, though. :)
