Like tripleransom, Sherlock Holmes fandom brought me here. I didn't pick any of the gifts, since they're not fandoms I'm in myself, but I did want to say that I thought the statistics you used to post were very cool indeed. I don't believe you've posted any since we added each other, but I went back once and discovered them. There's something inherently fascinating about fandom statistics, even when they're for fandoms I don't know that well myself. I'd never seen anyone doing statistics like that before - it's a brilliant idea.
Very interesting, maybe I will have to create something for Sherlock Holmes. TBH, my giftee in the last holmestice had ACD among their requests, and I started writing one and got several thousand words in before I chickened out and wrote a BBC piece instead. I just feel like I don't have a firm grip on the language, not to even speak of the other era details. But statistics are always fun. :)
Oh yes, I know what you mean! I just started writing in a US/Canadian-based fandom recently, and it's kind of scary to write... ;) I feel like I don't have a good handle on the language or the details of day-to-day life at all. But having a beta you trust works wonders! I do hope that ACD fic will see the light of day someday :)
Snatched a few minutes to check my flist while on holiday and saw this. Congratulations on 100 followers! :D
I'd love for you to write another Johnlock fic, although icons or fic recs are also lovely.
What on earth is Ballykissangel?
And what pairing(s) do you like in HP? I'm currently having a small HP revival - have never been into the fandom though, no idea why - and put a Slytherin scarf on my Christmas wishlist. :D
Haha, Ballykissangel was my first fandom, and I know that I do still have at least one follower on here left over from that. It was a BBC Northern Ireland TV series that ran for 6 series from 1996-2001. It was a drama, but it had funny bits too. The first three series were the best, after that it went a bit downhill when the two lead actors left the show. But if you are interested, I definitely would still recommend it.
My OTP in HP is/was Snape/Hermione. I was very involved in FictionAlley, the fan fiction archive and discussion forum, for many years. And I was sorted into Ravenclaw on Pottermore. :)
I've never heard of that but looked it up now. Sounds quite interesting. Oh, that can't have been esay when the lead actors left the show. Did you slash anyone there?
Awww, I love Snape. He's my favourite character in HP (and I must admit I always found Harry to be a bit tiresome *ducks and runs*). I was thinking about joining Pottermore to let myself be sorted but haven't gotten around to it yet. :) Do you see yourself in Ravenclaw?
I never shipped any slash pairings until John/Sherlock. I'm pretty much a canon whore, so I generally have to see the chemistry in the original material before I can get behind a ship. I also ship Spock/Uhura, for example, but just don't see Kirk/Spock. So for Ballykissangel, I shipped Peter/Assumpta, which was the main pairing anyway.
Snape/Hermione is sort of an odd exception of a pairing that I was totally puzzled by when I first heard about it (student/teacher, age gap), and that I definitely don't see in the books, but I read a fic just to see how that could possibly work, and it just grabbed me hard. Unfortunately, I don't know which fic it was any more.
So anyway, John/Sherlock is a pairing that I really see a basis for in the series, even if it's meant to be platonic. They are, as Moffat said, simply "two blokes who get on instantly and without qualm... and we all want to have a friendship like that."
And yes, I am a stereotypical Ravenclaw. Grades were (in my school days) everything, and I'm still a total nitpicker.
Pottermore, tbh, isn't really worth it in my opinion. It has some interesting content, but mostly I found it too slow and 'young' for me. That was back when it first opened, though. I haven't been back on in over a year.
My first slash pairing was Frodo/Sam but when I look at the films and books I enjoyed when I was younger I realize that if I had known that slash existed and what it was, I'd have been a slasher far earlier. I mean, I have read and watched Maurice, Another Country, Priest etc etc etc... :) But ever since I discovered slash I have a hard time with reading het.
Snape/Hermione - Oh, that's interesting - seduced by a fic! ;-)
I feel with Sherlock and John it's easy to slash them because they already have a lot of incarnations, starting with Conan Doyle and then all the films and TV series, some of which ventured into gay relationship territory. :) And the BBC series makes it very easy to give them that little push from a platonic to a non-platonic love. :)
I'm not a huge HP fan but I would like to let myself get sorted. And I recently happened to walk by the place where JK Rowling wrote the books and that rekindle my interest a bit. :)
Your recs are a blast and you have such good taste. Wading through so much fic is daunting sometimes, but I can always trust you when you suggest something to read. Love it. Thank you for sharing!
